Question 1

How do I calculate how much sod I need?

Accepted Answer

To calculate how much sod you need, measure your lawn's length and width in feet, multiply them to get the total square footage (Length × Width = Total Sq Ft), and add a 10% to 15% waste factor to account for cutting around curves, walkways, and flowerbeds. Finally, divide your total square footage by the size of a single sod roll (typically 10 sq ft) or pallet (typically 450 to 500 sq ft).

Question 2

How does the sod calculator work?

Accepted Answer

Our free sod calculator takes your lawn dimensions or total square footage, applies a 10% cutting waste allowance, and instantly computes required sod rolls (10 sq ft each), slabs (2.67 sq ft each), and full pallets (450–500 sq ft each). It also estimates project costs, total wet transport weight, and topsoil requirements in cubic yards.

Question 3

How much does sod cost per roll?

Accepted Answer

On average, a standard roll of sod (2 feet wide by 5 feet long, covering 10 square feet) costs between $3.50 and $8.50 per roll for materials alone. Pricing varies depending on the grass variety (such as Bermuda, Zoysia, Tall Fescue, or Kentucky Bluegrass) and local farm delivery pricing.

Question 4

How much does it cost to sod a yard?

Accepted Answer

Installing sod for a typical residential yard (1,000 to 2,500 sq ft) generally costs between $1,000 and $6,250 total. DIY sod material prices range from $0.35 to $0.85 per square foot, while full-service professional installation (including old lawn removal, soil preparation, grading, labor, and delivery) averages $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot.

Question 5

How many pallets of sod do I need?

Accepted Answer

The number of pallets you need depends on your total lawn square footage. A standard pallet covers 450 to 500 square feet (or 400 sq ft for St. Augustine slabs):

500 sq ft yard: ~1.1 pallets
1,000 sq ft yard: ~2.2 pallets
2,500 sq ft yard: ~5.6 pallets
5,000 sq ft yard: ~11.1 pallets

Always round up to the nearest half or full pallet when ordering.

Question 6

How do I measure my lawn for a sod calculator?

Accepted Answer

Divide your lawn into simple shapes (rectangles, triangles, or circles). Measure each shape in feet using a tape measure or measuring wheel. Multiply Length × Width for rectangles, (Base × Height) ÷ 2 for triangles, or 3.14 × Radius² for circles. Sum all area totals together and enter the net square footage into our sod calculator.

Question 7

How much does sod cost per square foot?

Accepted Answer

Sod material costs between $0.35 and $0.85 per square foot for farm-harvested turf. When including professional installation labor, topsoil layer prep, and site grading, total costs range from $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot.

Question 8

What's the difference between sod rolls, slabs, and pallets?

Accepted Answer

Sod Rolls: Standard 2 ft × 5 ft strips (10 sq ft) rolled up for easy unrolling on rectangular lawns.
Sod Slabs: Flat 16 in × 24 in rectangular pieces (2.67 sq ft), common for St. Augustine grass.
Sod Pallets: Stacked wooden pallets holding 45 to 50 rolls (450–500 sq ft) or 150 to 175 slabs (400–450 sq ft) weighing 1,500 to 3,000 lbs.

Question 9

How often should I water new sod?

Accepted Answer

Water new sod heavily immediately after installation (1 to 1.5 inches deep to soak the underlying soil). For the first 2 weeks, water 2 to 3 times daily for 15 to 20 minutes to keep sod roots and soil moist. Once rooted (after 2 to 3 weeks), reduce watering to 1 inch per week split into 2 to 3 deep watering sessions.
