Species & Climate Specs

Popular Turfgrass Varieties & Pallet Specs

Pallet yield varies by regional harvesting practices, soil weight, and cut thickness.

Bermuda Grass

Warm-Season

Extremely durable and fast-growing turf popular in Southern regions and athletic fields. High heat and drought tolerance.

Sun Need:Full Sun (8+ hrs)
Traffic Rating:High / Heavy Duty
Standard Cut:10 sq ft rolls (2' x 5')
Pallet Yield:450 - 500 sq ft

St. Augustine Grass

Warm-Season

Broad, lush turf blades that perform exceptionally well in coastal and Southern lawns with moderate shade.

Sun Need:Moderate Shade Tolerant
Traffic Rating:Moderate
Standard Cut:Slabs (16" x 24" / 2.67 sq ft)
Pallet Yield:400 - 450 sq ft

Zoysia Grass

Warm-Season

Dense carpet-like feel with low water requirements and superior weed suppression once established.

Sun Need:Full Sun to Moderate Shade
Traffic Rating:High
Standard Cut:Standard Rolls / Slabs
Pallet Yield:450 sq ft

Tall Fescue

Cool-Season

Deep-rooted cool-season turf that stays green year-round in transition zones and Northern climates.

Sun Need:Sun to Partial Shade
Traffic Rating:Moderate / High
Standard Cut:10 sq ft rolls (2' x 5')
Pallet Yield:450 - 500 sq ft

Kentucky Bluegrass (KBG)

Cool-Season

Rich dark color with self-repairing rhizomes. Standard for Northern and Midwest lawns.

Sun Need:Full Sun
Traffic Rating:Moderate
Standard Cut:10 sq ft rolls (2' x 5')

Measuring Guide

How to Measure Irregular Lawn Shapes

Break your yard into simple geometric shapes to calculate exact sod coverage before ordering.

1. RectangleStandard Front/Back Yards
Width (W)Length (L)L × W
Formula: Length × Width

e.g. 40 ft × 25 ft = 1,000 sq ft

2. TriangleCorners & Wedges
Height (h)Base (b)½ (b × h)
Formula: ½ × Base × Height

e.g. (30 ft × 20 ft) ÷ 2 = 300 sq ft

3. CircleRound Lawns & Rings
Diameter = 2 × Radiusr3.14 × r²
Formula: 3.14 × Radius²

e.g. 3.14 × 15² = 706.5 sq ft

4. L-ShapeWrap-Around Lawns
Leg 1Leg 2CutoutBox 1 + Box 2
Formula: (L1 × W1) + (L2 × W2)

e.g. Split into 2 boxes & add together

5. Donut / RingPool or Patio Cutout
Outer Radius (R)Cutout(Inner r)π (R² - r²)
Formula: 3.14 × (Outer R² - Inner r²)

e.g. Outer Circle Area minus Pool Cutout Area

3-Step Yard Measuring Strategy

1

Sketch & Divide

Draw your lawn on paper and break irregular sections into rectangles, triangles & circles.

2

Measure Boundaries

Use a measuring tape to get dimensions in feet for each zone.

3

Add 5-10% Cutting Waste

Enter zone dimensions in our calculator below and keep waste allowance for edge trimming.

Golden Rule of Sod Ordering: "Measure twice, order once!" Including a 10% cutting waste buffer avoids expensive separate re-orders mid-job.

Understanding Sod Pallet Sizes & Pallet Coverage Rates

How many square feet in a sod pallet? A standard sod pallet covers between 400 and 500 square feet, depending on packaging format:

Format 1

Standard Turf Rolls

Cut at 2 feet wide by 5 feet long (10 sq ft per strip). A full pallet carries 45 to 50 rolls, providing 450 to 500 sq ft of coverage.

Format 2

St. Augustine Sod Slabs

Harvested as flat 16" × 24" slabs (2.67 sq ft each). Pallets carry 150 to 175 slabs supplying approximately 400 to 450 sq ft.

Format 3

Commercial Big Rolls

Continuous 200 sq ft rolls installed with specialized tractor attachments on golf courses, sports fields, and commercial developments.
